Search Stats — How It Works

Overview

Every search a logged-in classmate types into the Classmates directory search box gets logged — what they searched for, who searched it, and how many results it matched.

What's Tracked

  • Only authenticated, non-committee classmates are tracked — committee searches don't skew the data.
  • A search is logged once, about 600ms after a classmate stops typing — not on every keystroke.
  • Searches shorter than 2 characters aren't logged.
  • "John Smith" and "john smith" are grouped together as one row.

Click a Row

Opens the list of every classmate who searched that term, when, and how many results it matched for them.

Zero-Result Searches

A search term with a consistently low "Avg. Results" is worth a look — it may mean classmates are looking for someone who isn't in the directory yet (a missing-classmate signal), or a name spelled differently than the directory has it.
